Round 3 of the Southern XC was held at in the stunning Crow Hill venue in the New Forest. This was also the regional championship round, so lots to race for.
For Pedal 2 Pedal we had Edith, James and I. Karen wasn’t defending her title as last year’s vet championship winner as she is focusing on longer endurance races, and Fred was poorly.
I raced first in the men’s open race. I had my usual rubbish start despite being warm with lots of folk passing me before the first singletrack. I then started reeling them in and passing back before finally making it up to a quick-ish group at the end of lap 2. 3 of us broke out from this and then finally just 2 of us. I was quicker in the singletrack, but he pulled away on the hills. Eventually he dropped me and I ended up on my own for lap 4, and came in 21st. A fun race on a great natural feeling, proper mtb race-course.
Next was Edith in the u9s. Edith got a good start and carried her speed well on the downhill rooty descents. The climbs were tough and she cleaned them initially, before running them on later laps. Her new (hand-me-down) bike being heavier than the old one didn’t help! After 15 minutes, Edith came in a hard-fought 7th place. Well done.
A good morning out on a fun course.
