Round 2 was at the pan-flat, but fast and furious Checkendon. Held on Easter Sunday, we would have to earn our chocolate eggs this year!
I went first in mens open. This year the open race has been extended to a 4 laps. Sounds perfect as I always thought that 3 laps was a bit short, but I haven’t got the pace to compete in the vet 5 lap race.
I started steady as I’d been a bit off during the week and not ridden. But after lap 1, I felt good, so turned up the pace and started chasing riders down. The course was also one of the best I’ve ever ridden there with some really flowy tight turns, but plenty of straights to pass on. It was running really fast too in perfect dry, sunny but cool conditions. 15min laps! I’ve never gone that fast there before! Anyway after 4 laps, I came in 25th of 54. Not too bad, but could have been better with an faster opening lap.
Edith was next up in the u9s. After the Wasing race dnf, Edith was now not gridded so started back a bit. Getting off to a good start, Edith made up some places and pushed on hard. The u9’s race is now a 15minute race, so pacing matters. Edith kept it consistent and came in a 3rd. Edith was very happy with her first podium of 2017 in the Southern XC. Chocolate eggs on the podium and for every finisher too as a nice bonus!
Fred was our last racer in the u12s. Also not gridded, Fred made a good effort off the start, but had to slow to avoid the crash in front of him putting him nearly last. Chasing hard, Fred made up a few places, but had to pace the race as it was now 25minutes. Fred kept it tidy and consistent, eventually coming in 20th .
Well done to both – a great morning’s racing on a very fast Checkendon course.
