The final round. Southern XC at Checkedon

The final round. Southern XC at Checkedon

The final round of the Southern cross country series took place at the weekend. Pedal 2 Pedal team members Fred, Ollie, Hannah and Karen headed to Checkedon to finish off a great first season racing for the team.

Both Karen and Fred were chasing points for overall series contention, whilst Ollie in the under 11’s was looking to improve on his 15th position in his first race.

The day started sunny and both Fred and Ollie went off on a practise lap around the course easily getting over the technical features that consisted of a log, roots sharp turns and off camber turns.

First up was Fred in the u9’s. The start was much tighter than usual, but Fred got away in around 4th position, riding well until an over-shot corner meant an unwelcome trip into the mud and bushes. Recovering quickly, Fred rode consistently and came in 5th, and overall 3rd in the series. Well done Fred in his first full regional XC series.

Following Fred was Ollie in the u11’s race. Ollie got off to a good start and rode smoothly throughout and carried his speed well over the roots and through the tight corners. Riding twice the distance of the u9’s this is a tough race with no downhills to get any respite. Full gas all the way! Ollie kept on the gas and came in 11th a brilliant achievement for only his second XC race.

Next up was the women’s race with Hannah in the elite race and Karen in the vets.  Read Hannah’s report. As per the children’s race, the Checkendon senior course is flat and unrelenting. Straights need to be ridden flat out and speed carried over roots and through the very tight corners. It rewards power, power and more power!

Karen got off to a reasonable start in 4th place, but lost some ground on the leaders on the first lap as she missed the practice lap and rode all the corners blind on lap 1. IMG_1817Pulling it back with faster laps 2 and 3 saw her close down on the leading 3, but Karen didn’t quite have enough speed on the straights to bridge back. Finishing 4th, this was enough to seal 3rd overall in the series. Well done Karen in her first full regional xc series.

Overall, a great day out and a good series final for all. Really good riding by all – well done everyone
