Fred and Libby headed to Checkendon for round 1 of the autumn XC Rampage Series. This was to be Libby’s first ever bike race – very exciting!
Both arrived early enough to get a sighting lap in. The course was similar to the one used for the final round of the Southern XC races and featured rooty corners, log mounds, fast straights and a few muddy patches. Going flat out on the straights and carrying speed well through the tight corners is key here.
Fred went first in the u9’s race and was 3rd off the line. Fred chased hard to bridge the gap to the 1st and 2nd placed boys and nearly managed it towards the end of lap 1. Lap 2 saw a small gap grow again, and all 3 had a big lead over 4th. Fred eventually came in a solid 3rd place. Well done Fred.
Next up was Libby in the u11’s race. Libby got off to a great start in 3rd place and held it to the first section of singletrack in the woods. Libby took some great lines and kept her speed up over the roots. Throughout the race Libby maintained 4th or 5th place and after a huge effort called it a day at 3 laps. Fantastic effort Libby and well done! Lots of experience gained from her first race.
Following that we watched some of the youth and junior races, had a play in the woods, and being Checkendon, we couldn’t leave without a swing on the enormous hammock!
Well done all and see you all at round 2.
